My aim is to tell my story in the hope that it will help young people avoid the life I was subjected to. The UK government has made it a statutory requirement in the RSE (Relationships & Sex Education) curriculum that all Senior School students are to "gain the knowledge of what a healthy relationship is like, [and so that] they can be empowered to identify when relationships are unhealthy". Within the last 10 years Controlling and Coercive behaviour in an intimate or family relationship has become a criminal offence under Section 76 of the Serious Crimes Act.

At age 19 one email changed my life forever. By age 20 I had lost my friends, my freedom, my hopes and dreams; unrecognisable from the young woman I once was. At age 19 one email changed my life forever. By age 20 I had lost my friends, my freedom, my hopes and dreams; unrecognisable from the young woman I once was. I became trapped, manipulated and controlled. It always seemed normal, natural and made perfect sense; such is the power of a controlling and coercive partner. There were no obvious warning signs, no bright lights, nothing, just a slow, steady transformation further and further away from who I was and him turning me into who he wanted me to be. In a dramatic turn of events, 12 years later, I was given an out. I have now come to realise that it is my duty to share my story in the hope that young women and men will not fall into the same manipulative web that was spun for my fate. I have found my voice and I am determined to use it to save others.

Guided by the statutory guidelines set out by the UK Government, I am open to tell my story of being a victim of an abusive relationship. I work with young men and women, aged 15 - 18 (Years 11 - 13), telling my story face-to-face, educating them about the importance of healthy relationships and the detrimental impact of unhealthy ones. P
